Kate Washburn
MA, LCMHCA, NCC
I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) in North Carolina, and I received my Master of Arts from Wake Forest University in 2025 after a meaningful five years working as an educator. I have two years of experience working with clients in the group practice setting, first in graduate practicum and intern roles, then as an associate counselor.
I am a firm believer that two (or more) brains are better than one and that this work cannot occur in a silo. I am supervised by Ben Bentley, LCMHCS, who has decades of experience in various counseling settings. I also participate in regular peer consultation group meetings, where I consult with colleagues about counseling-related concerns (while protecting confidentiality, of course). Finally, I participate in regular trainings to ensure ongoing learning and up-to-date client care.
My areas of clinical interest and experience include:
-
life transitions
-
grief and loss
-
women’s issues
-
ADHD
-
anxiety
-
depression
-
perinatal mental health
-
PTSD
-
trauma recovery
-
work- and/or school-related stress
I integrate concepts from Person-Centered Therapy, Existential Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), meaning that I provide holistic support to clients as they move towards a more balanced, meaningful, and authentic life. Fostering a supportive and trusting therapeutic relationship is central to this work.
I am also an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)-Trained Therapist, which allows me to help clients work through trauma and other challenging experiences. You can read more about EMDR on EMDRIA's website.
Prior to my work as a counselor, I earned my Master’s in Education from Auburn University, where I trained to become a Spanish teacher. I taught in both middle and high school settings for several years before transitioning into my role as an academic coach, in which I supported individual students and their families more directly. My experience and insight as an educator has had a profound impact on my counselor identity. As a part of this training, I also spent time living in Spain, Costa Rica, and Peru, where I learned to more fully embrace openness and human connection.
When not at work, you can find me working in the gardening, cooking, and hiking with my husband and our two pups, Gumbo and Vegas!
